The popularity of trail running is increasing consistently. After all, running on uneven paths is an effective full-body workout. As Steven Rindner mentions, trail running also allows runners to clear their head, enjoy some peaceful moments in nature and admire breathtaking views on the run. Much like hiking, trail running can also expose a person to a wide range of conditions. Trail runners typically stay outdoors for a long period of time and cover an eclectic variety of rugged terrain. Therefore, it is imperative that they always stay fully equipped on the run.

Trail running is a sport where one runs off-road on forest trails or dirt roads, instead of running on smooth surfaces like pavements or roads. The exact gear a runner takes with them on a trail run would depend on many factors, including the length and location of the run. Overall, here are a few things one must remember before hitting the trail:

  • Cell phone: Most people carry their cell phones wherever they go today, including on runs. A smartphone typically has apps that can serve as a map, or track distance and time spent running, which can be of a huge help. Moreover, one may need a cell phone in case they experience an emergency at any time during the run.
  • Clothing: Breathable clothing is necessary when going on a run in warm temperatures. But in case the runners expect to encounter bad weather or colder temperatures, they should consider bringing layers like a pullover or gloves. If rain is a concern, then carrying a lightweight rainshell or windbreaker shall be a good idea. 
  • First-aid kit: These kits should ideally contain bandages and antibacterial ointments that one may need in case they fall or for some other reason suffer minor wounds during the trail run. If one plans to go on a long run in a remote location, then it is better that they also carry water treatment tablets and additional medical supplies in case of a more serious injury. 
  • Food: Trail running does burn a lot of calories. Hence, runners may need to replenish in between the run. Energy gels are ideal for short runs. However, if one is undertaking a long-distance trail run, they should pack a variety of energy bars, gels and chews with them. 
  • Headlamp: Headlamps are required for running at night, so that one can see the trail clearly. One should try to find headlamps with a minimum output of around 200 lumens. Some runners may even opt to carry a handheld flashlight as an alternative or for further illumination.

As Steven Rindner mentions, trail runners can use a running belt, waist pack or a backpack to hold important supplies. These supplies would include food, first aid, and water. Many runners’ pack also serve as hydration packs. They are designed especially to hold water and personal effects. One must try their best to find running packs that are comfortable enough and do not interfere with their natural movements.
