This is hilarious. The Daily Mail are doing their usual trick of trying to whip up anger about some comedian they find offensive. They tried it a few weeks ago with Stewart Lee but it didn’t go anywhere. I bet they’re trying to reclaim those dizzy heights they scaled during the Russell Brand/Jonathan Ross episode.
Families’ anger at Jimmy Carr’s ‘disgraceful’ joke about war hero amputees making ‘good paralympic team in 2012′
Comedian Jimmy Carr was criticised last night after insulting hero soldiers who have lost limbs in battle.
The 37-year-old comic stunned a 2,500-strong audience at a show by joking about troops who have been blown up on the front line.
Five minutes from the end of his show at the Manchester Apollo on Friday, he said: ‘Say what you like about these servicemen amputees from Iraq and Afghanistan, but we’re going to have a ******* good paralympic team in 2012.’
The joke was even more surprising given that Carr has visited seriously injured troops at Selly Oak military hospital in Birmingham and the Headley Court rehabilitation centre near Epsom, Surrey.
One man who saw the show said: ‘There was some laughter but most of the audience agreed there was no funny side. It happened with just five minutes to go, clearly deliberately. I just thought, “That’s sick.”
‘These guys are getting blown apart fighting for their country and he makes jokes about them. It’s in the middle of the Poppy Appeal, too. It was just too much.’
What absolute rubbish. I bet most people laughed at that joke. After all, they’re paying to see Jimmy Carr, so they more than likely enjoy his so-called ‘risky humour’. The papers always manage to find one moron whose job it is to sit there, listening intently for an edgy joke, then immediately shit his/her pants and burst into tears when he/she hears it.
Yesterday, Carr, who was due to appear at the Manchester Apollo last night and again tonight, apologised for any offence he may have caused.
He said in a statement: ‘I’ve got nothing but respect for the young men and women who put their lives on the line for this country. I’ve visited Selly Oak and Headley Court on many occasions.
‘I’m sorry if anyone was offended but that’s the kind of comedy I do. If a silly joke draws attention to the plight of these servicemen then so much the better. My intention was only to make people laugh.’
However, Carr’s explanation has failed to reduce the offence caused by his remarks. Diane Dernie, the mother of wounded war hero Ben Parkinson, attacked the ‘offensive’ joke. The 25-year-old lost both legs and suffered 37 other injuries, including brain damage, when his Land Rover was blown up in Afghanistan three years ago.
Ms Dernie said: ‘I hope Jimmy Carr realises that these soldiers have lost their limbs fighting, before he makes jokes like that. Soldiers are fighting for freedom of speech. I hope Mr Carr remembers that when he makes offensive jokes ridiculing them.
I wonder if this lemon sees the irony in complaining about an offensive joke, then mentioning freedom of speech. Anyway, they aren’t really fighting for freedom of speech, are they? The British army are an unwanted force over there; it’s inevitable a few of them will have their legs blown off. They might even get to blow a few legs off civilians themselves before that happens. The cause is not quite as honourable as some causes in the past, you know?
Diane, it’s only a joke. Don’t lose your legs over it.
What does Jan Moir have to say on the matter?
She thinks the joke was troubling, sleazy and gay.
“I’m sorry if Jimmy Carr is offended by it but this is the kind of comedy I do. If an offensive image draws attention to the crass stupidity and heartlessness of a third rate comedian then so much the better. My intention was only to take the piss out of Mr Carr.”
I doubt Jimmy is offended, G.O.T.
Go fck yourself u son of a btch they are fightin and u dont even appreciate them. burn in helll. Diane is right, her son fought, and came out a hero. U are a big mother fckin, diick sckin bitchh
I think you’re a warrior in a way. Every day you fight against the terrible enemy of mental retardation. Did you go to Afghanistan and get your fingers blown off? Is that why you can’t type properly?
Jeez, it’s a joke and Jimmy is a great comic. He usually ends his performances by testing the audience on how far he can go, he would have done this gag because the one he did before was more tame and the audience wanted him to go a step further. When I saw him it was about the holocaust, not neccesarily in the best taste, but thats Jimmy and thats why he is popular.

Sir, that’s some great stuff from Mr. Crocket. How did a person like that end up on bmd? He is my hero. And the free speech thing is fantastic. Last I checked armys mostly kill villages and peasants for resources in third world nations. Warriors and heros indeed.
That’s right sir. There’s some load of tossers on the internet, most of them angry teenagers. Did you see where he said “u don’t even appreciate them”? Idiots like that don’t understand that their country is not the only country in the world. He is American, so I wasn’t surprised to see that he thinks everyone across the globe appreciates what the US and British do.
