As reported by The Guardian, Eminem’s comeback single, We Made You, begins with the lyrics “Guess who? Did you miss me?” I’m pretty sure a few million angry American teenage boys have interrupted their gun-polishing for a few moments to scramble to the computer and watch the return of their misanthropic mouthpiece, but for those of us who have more than one functioning brain cell, Eminem is about as relevant a mouthpiece as Uri Geller or John Fashanu.
The new video is standard Eminem fare and contains the usual gurning impersonations of other celebrity nincompoops in ‘hilarious’ situations, without a trace of subtlety or wit. Who’s that I see in the casino, stroking a cigar at the card-table? Why it’s Bugs Bunny face himself, 50 Cent, looking as utterly retarded as ever. Oh Mr. Mathers, you have such interesting commentary to impart! Sarah Palin? Britney Spears? That’s so last year you know… perhaps you should give Weird Al Yankovich a call if you’re stuck for some cutting-edge lyrics. Eminem, tapping into the political zeitgeist as usual.
Big Em looks a tad too comfortable writhing around in open-top shirts, wigs and doing large-scale musical numbers with men in leather jackets. He’d better be careful, or people might think he is a ‘fuckin fag,’ as his adolescent fans like to type in youtube comments.
The man clearly needs to put on about three stone; I’ve never seen him so emaciated. I suppose waving your arms around so devastatingly all day while you spin your rhymes can make you lose a lot of weight. And what rhymes the man spins, so intelligent and tightly worded, all set to a terrifically catchy hip hop beat! Er, not really. Just more of the same squeaky voice word-vomit over a backing beat polished to within an inch of it’s life with the odd funny sound thrown in.
