If you know this story you can imagine how the chills crept up my spine... I awoke one night to my own screaming, this being the only way to get away from the apparition that had haunted me since childhood; turning the light on I picked up The Mystery Book, a collection of short stories published by Odhams that I had bought at a car boot sale, and began to read The Horla by Guy de Maupassant.
