I have to say that as much as I disagree with the Catholic church and their 'policies' the activist groups are getting on my tits at this stage...it's common knowledge that the Pope is anti-gay yet every time he mentions it people get their panties in a twist like this is some shocking new thing he's just said. Unfortunately, this may be the wrong way to react as it just makes the Catholic hierarchy more resolute in their beliefs because they feel under attack...and visa-versa.

Suicide seems to be a common outcome of abuse, it must have been so hard to keep all that inside.

The Church should have no business in adoptions, they just don't have a good record when it comes to taking care of children.

Plenty of us have heterosexual parents but that does not guarantee an idyllic and stable family life, as we well know.

Think you made several good points BMD.

My opinions: Firstly, it would be great if our government severed all ties with the Vatican and the twisted lunatics therein. Throwing the Papal Nuncio onto a raft off Dun Laoghaire pier seems like a good idea to me, and let his god look after him from there, on his trip back to Rome.

Seriously though, I come from a family where I and all my siblings are adopted and we all turned out semi-normal citizens, and I don't see any reason why long-term gay couples should be denied the right to adopt (whether from here or from other countries), or more importantly why kids are denied the right to be in some kind of a stable family environment, even if it bucks convention for a couple of years in our conservative state.

I feel quite lucky about this as I lived in a certain country town for a couple of years in my teens and knew a couple of kids who attended local schools but still lived in the local catholic orphanage (mentioned in the recent sex-abuse Inquiries). I learned over the years that both had committed suicide. Draw your own conclusions...
